Guns Made of Unobtanium
BY Herschel SmithBelow is another installment of Nicholas Bugosh on the Marlin 444. His insights are wise and experienced. The Rossi R95 has trouble with the Hornady jacketed flat nose 265 grain cartridges, which is a deal breaker for me.
But what I really want is the Rossi R95 in 454 Casull, which is just unobtainium. Here’s another gun that can’t be found: the CZ Bren 2 in 7.62X51. Why advertise a gun that cannot be purchased?
Those CZ Bren 2s in 7.62×51 are essentially “unobtainium” in the states. Nice gun.

Why doesn’t Rossi put out 454 Casull lever guns in Walnut in anything but the 16.5″ barrel?

@Hershel. They’re good saddle guns, yet surprisingly accurate at that barrel length. Long distance shooters they are not.
My R95 in 454 hits a 3″ circle consistently at 100yds. That’s good enough for me, and it’s what the gun is purposed for. I also like the fact it shares the same ammo with my sidearm, especially up here in bear country.

Unobtanium. I had a run in with that disorder many years ago with Winchester. They claimed that the introduction of the Winchester ’94 in .444 Marlin was imminent. I went to my favorite gun store (long gone now – Thank You Broadway Hardware McAllen TX !) and plunked down a down payment and filled out a backorder form for that rifle to arrive. I already had the Marlin in that round but the Winchester for some reason just ‘lit my fire’. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive. After waiting for eight months, the store contacted me and asked if I wanted my money back until the model was distributed. I reluctantly received my money back.
The Heart Wants What It Wants. No reason why that is so, just happens.

An old school solution would be to find a solid lever action and commission a gunsmith to chamber it in your calibre of choice. If you’re going with .454 Casull in the long gun, then your parent cartridge is .45 Long Colt….so why not make the bespoke levergun in .460 S&W, a mid range revolver in .454, and a little bubby in .45 LC. Bookends, and a whole shelf of power and convenience. Why not modify a 1895 Winchester or Browning BLR lever action, with suitable Ruger *-hawks to match. Assemble a viable group of customers and a willing gunsmith, and the artillery park is an achieveable dream.

A Savage 99 in .444 Marlin would be very nice. No sure how much work is involved, but what a woods rifle that would be.
