That finding a spark using broken glass with a ferro rod – THAT I did not know could be done.

The kids all got ferro rods, from 3 yrs to 12 yrs old and had a great time making fires. Cotton balls are instant gratification for them as they are learning.
Teach them how to make fire with a ferro rod, then how to make char material/cloth with that fire so they can learn how to use a flint and steel.
That was one of the problems my mom had when she was a Den Mother when I was in Cub Scouts – us boys were learning how to make fire while the other Cub Scout dens were learning how to make papier mache crafts. The other adults didn’t like that.
