Federal officers in Portland may have been permanently blinded by lasers, officials say

BY Herschel Smith

News from hell.

At least three federal officers in Portland may not recover their vision after earlier this week demonstrators, who have shown up in crowds of over 1,000 for more than 50 consecutive nights, shined lasers in their eyes and threw fireworks at a federal courthouse, officials said.

According to Biblical law, which requires retribution and restitution, these people should be caught, turned into slaves to pay recompense for the lost wages of the officers over a lifetime, made to pay for medical care, and then have their eyes gouged out (Exodus 21:23-25, Leviticus 24:19-21).  Although it might be problematic for them to be blind slaves.  That part may require a wise judge.

Don’t get mad at me.  I didn’t make the rules.

    Don’t blind them. I have never been a fan of a tooth for a tooth. That would be letting them off too easy. Hard labor for the rest of their lives. There are going to be plenty of familys out of work needing help paying their bills because of these scum. Ball and chain ‘um. The real punishment will come in the lake of fire.

    @penses,

    But you see, there is no such thing as a crime against society. Ball and chain works for me, but ALL WAGES for life go to the aggrieved. NONE GOES TO THE STATE.

    I would be okay with that settlement.

    I’ve had to use laser-protective eyewear in the lab, and wondered about incorporating that functionality into “generic eyepro.” Protection against laser light is nanometer specific, in that I’m not aware of “broad spectrum” protection against the full range of possible frequencies of light generated from lasers. But, it’s been years since my lab days so things may have changed.

    It’s not surprising that Leftists have discovered alternate weaponry, and given the proliferation of laser sighting equipment on firearms it seems reasonable that precautions against accidental laser blinding should be taken in some circumstances, squad training in shoot houses, for example. And, what works to prevent accidents should be just as effective against delberate action.

    If the po po are a standing army, are lasers not a valid combat tactic? Let them fight it out against each other and never interrupt your enemies (yes they both are) when they are making a mistake.

    For a more practical real world application to the rest of us –

    is there eye protection available that will shield out lasers?

    I think that might be good to have in the kit.

    Not a fan of federal cops, but it’s okay with me if they want to treat anyone in Portland pointing a laser at them like Randy Weaver’s wife.

    @Scott,

    So this is a complicated question, and I cannot answer it simply.

    My only choice is to perform a calculation and explain what happens with eye pro for lasers, the cost of eye pro-, and why that eye pro- isn’t functional in a fighting environment.

    I’m not making an oath and covenant to make a post on this, but I’ll make a commitment to look for a chance to do this if I can find the time.

    thanks Hershel, this has been on my mind for a while as lasers have been in the news for a couple of years. they seem to be a good 4gw item – not that I want to employ them as a weapon – and it might be prudent to start thinking about countering that threat. but your quick answer appears to be that there isn’t anything off the shelf like super duper sun glasses.

  12. On July 23, 2020 at 2:46 pm, Herschel Smith said:

    @scott,

    No. It all has to do with tested optical density of the glasses according to ANSI specs.

    Not only that, a base assumption behind all of this is the time to blinking reflex and thus exposure time.

    It’s a long story and it’ll take some fisking to work this out in a post.

    @Charlotte,

    Good points. I had forgotten that we’re dealing with green light, which is a different wavelength.

    However, the fact remains that (a) I would want something that conforms and is tested and certified to ANSI standards for lasers, and (b) all of these protective devices do not let you stare into a laser unharmed. They ALL assume blink.

    They are only good for a very brief moment.

    I’ll try to cover all of this later.

    Just like I’d like to cover the health effects of Tritium night sights on humans. Have not had the chance.

    Simple solution : anybody with a laser gets shot immediately. No regard for collateral damage. When one laser flash gets a dozen people shot they’ll wise up pretty fast.

    My understanding of laser goggles is that they protect against a narrow band of light. I’d presume the rioters are using laser pointers, which tend to be red (~650nm) or green (~430nm if memory serves) I believe the green ones are more dangerous, so that’s the type on which I’d focus my attention.

    Herschel, while you’re researching, in addition to my comment/question (above), I’m curious about the value of reflective surfaces for laser protection, as in “mirror sunglasses” – does it add any protection?

    I suspect we’re going to see increased use of lasers as weapons from the Left.
