Lever Action Rifle Short Takes
BY Herschel Smith
Here’s a YT short on the Marlin .444, although I have to say that my .444 doesn’t have problematic feeding like his seems to. Maybe it’s a “Remlin,” although I don’t know if they ever made one after Remington took over.
The Marlin .444 is an absolutely awesome cartridge.
The 30-30 is still a great hunting rifle.
Savage is now making lever action guns, but a quick visit to their web site shows that it’s available only up to 22 WMR.

In my younger days, I cast a 255 gr. Keith style bullet for 45 Colt that dropped out of the mold at.454 diameter. I would then paper patch them up to .458 and load them up in 45-70. Sort of a poor man’s 444.

I had no idea that Savage was attempting to re-open their lever action design. I wish them luck. Surprised that the rimfire magnums are part of the introduction.
The 30-30 cartridge is more than capable to taking deer sized animals. All without undue report or excessive recoil. If you know your game routes, this can be a distinct advantage.
My personal take is the .444 Marlin is a 30-30 ballistic twin but a larger diameter and heavier bullet. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Remington never made a .444 after they took over Marlin. I had a North Haven made Marlin .444 SS (the same rifle that’s in the video) a few years back that absolutely would not feed the 265 grain Hornady FTX. No problems with anything else though. I ended up getting out of the .444 since I was already invested in the .450 Marlin and .45-70. The .444 is a great cartridge but it gave me no advantage over the .450 and .45-70 where and what I hunt.

I shoot an 1886 Winchester built by Miroku and rebuilt out of the box by Turnbull. 45/90 means I do not give a damn what level plates you were wearing.

I keep waking up at 4:44. I believe it is a sign from the universe that I need to buy a .444 Marlin.

That sounds awful.
“I believe it is a sign from the universe that I need to buy a .444 Marlin.”
Do it.

Memory a bit foggy but ISTR there was a commemorative 1895 Winchester around the time of the centennial. Really wanted one of these but didn’t have the funds at the time.

I was on a halibut fishing trip out of La Push WA when the boat captain told me “if you want to hunt black bear get something in 444 Marlin” ergo I found a 1970s era Marlin 444S in mint condition and still have it. And dearly love it;-)
