An acquaintance of mine – a retired USAF colonel (O-6) – spent some time in Afghanistan during the GWOT embedded with the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division, as a technical advisor on UAVs and drones. He spoke very highly of their training, commitment and devotion to duty – as well as their operational effectiveness.
Mountain operations are among the most-difficult and challenging in the military repertoire. Climate and weather extremes, difficult terrain, tactical and operational hazards and challenges, logistics hurdles, transportation difficulties, you name it – those guys have to deal with it.
Many of the multipliers of U.S. military effectiveness are reduced or even eliminated during mountain operations. Just getting a casualty airlifted off of a mountaintop is a very big challenge – whether the enemy is shooting at you or not.
There’s a reason insurgents and irregulars based in mountainous environments are so tough to defeat!
