History of the 1911
BY Herschel SmithAt Shooting Times there is a good history of the 1911, including how the design transitioned into the double stack 2011.
Also of interest, there is a discussion of the Series 70 versus Series 80 modifications. Or, you could just purchase a Springfield Armory 1911 (Series 70) in which case they’ve handled the drop safe issue with a Titanium firing pin.

I look forward to this as I love the 1911.
First off, pretty much suck shooting a pistol though practicing live and dry fire to hopefully get better.
I shot a friends 1911 and was actually doing for me pretty well,I feel as it just seemed to fit naturally in my hand /it’s weight dropped me back on target better for me.My friend who is a great shooter and competes successfully that watching me and he stated and I agreed I found the pistol that works for me.I was staying at his home for a visit home and he dropped another couple of hundred rounds on me and did 50 a day, though I didn’t think so he said I was getting better and worked with me some practice routines to get even better,I had a great time visiting with im and his great wife!
He is considering selling me the one I was using/he has many.
