A .22 Magnum AR?
BY Herschel SmithI love the .22 WMR round, and have always believed that the .22LR was underpowered for anything other than plinking on trash can lids (which is what I did with it when I was a boy).
But in an AR? Will it work? Will the bolt extract the case without major modifications? Will it be reliable? How will the mags work without rim-locking?
Color me skeptical until it proves itself. I won’t be buying one.

Hi Herschel!!!,
Funny thing you should mention that!!!!…. I don’t know your experience with the ,22mag but I have just a smidge… Some years ago now, back in the late 80’s or early 90’s I acquired a AMT “Automag II” in .22WMR!!!! Full tilt Boogie 6′ barrel!! Oh! it shot great!!… ‘B-U-T-!!!!!”… after what I consider a miniscule number of rounds going down range….. the extractor would slip off the spent round, leave it in the chamber and as you can figure.. started having to carry a piece of “Coat Hanger wire” or something to boot out the spent round!! Too it back to AMT up in Acadia, CA. (I lived down south of there at the time) they replaced the main spring and i forget what else but the “Problem” kept going…
Some time later… eon’s almost,,, I bought a Ruger 10-22 in .22LR!!! Nice piece!! In the manual.. set up for both the .22LR..”AND” the .22WMR version … for the .22WMR version it “SPECIFICALLY” states… “Clean the piece “AFTER 50 ROUNDS!!!!!” …..HMMMMM????…. Well the Automag is long gone!! Sold it for more than I bought it for and then some!!!! But the “Problem” became obvious!!!!! When ya’ shoot” the residu builds up in the chamber!!! “Funny thing!!!”.. It is gritty, dirty and causes “DRAG” on the spent cartridge!!! With the Drag, the added pressure of the round and the “RIM” ,,,it doesn’t take a lot of “DRAG” to cause the pressure to expand the rim just enough and “VIOLA!!” …….
5 will get ya’ 10 that is what’s gonna’ happen with that AR!!!! “CLEAN WELL AFTER 50 ROUNDS!!!!!!
NOW!! Mind you… in a “Wheel Gun or Bolt Action Rifle!!!” The Dynamics are different… the chambered round is gonna’ stay put till sometimes later!!!
So much for my .22 cents worth!!!
Audentes, Fortuna, Iuvat!!!,
GOT GUNZ!!!!!!!!!!!…….OUTLAW!!!!,
(To Paraphrase the Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”…….)
“We’re All “Outlaw’s now….. YOU Know!!!??!!!”

I have a couple of Kel Tec PMR 30’s and they are a BLAST to shoot. After a few thousand rounds, they will start misfeeding and will have to go back to Kel Tec for a tune up. (Free)

I sold my PMR 30 but it was a fun pistol to shoot except you HAD to wear eye pro cause it liked to spit shit back at ya once in a while. Now, I still have the CMR 30 which is what that round shoots the best out of.

I also had an AMT Automag back in the day. Nice looking, great sights. Couldn’t get through one full mag without some sort of stoppage. Went back to AMT, and they apparently couldn’t fix it, because their repairs never helped. Good only for learning how to fix stoppages.
