Navy SEAL Roasts My Home Defense Rifle
BY Herschel Smith3 years, 7 months ago
Okay, whatever.
I see this the same way as I do the stupid KeyMod versus M-LOK debate. It’s a waste of time. Find the sling you want, practice with it, mount the sling where you want, get the optic you want, practice with it, make it modular to the extent you need, dress it up the way you want to, and ignore everyone else because your choices are what matter.
The only expert on what you want is you. Why on earth, after building rifles that are the ultimate in modularity, adjustability, adaptability and flexibility, does the community want to force everyone into sameness?

Sure, agree on the debate portion, but as the evaluator says, “there’s something to be said about ‘simple.’ I didn’t see how they debated or that it was a roast. The evaluator did razz the guy a bit, but hey, they seem to know each other pretty good.
The evaluator was also right about painting the platform….at least that’s my .02
Folks can certainly run what they want with no complaint from me; I stick with what is simple and works…and I paint my platform. :-)

Example from YT. I don’t know if that’s his only gun, but it makes my point.

Same reason that Collectivism will never die, despite its dismal record of continuing failure. Once a critical mass of people decide that everyone else has to do what they say, everybody gets to go along for the ride.

Who cards what others think. Fine what works for you and does what you want it to do. Hell I just bought a Officer Model Trapdoor and I don’t care what anyone thinks cause it’s cool, fun and does what I want it to do.

Re: Jack; you made me LOL. But seriously it wasn’t that bad, a few take aways, my personal guns all have aimpoint or trijicon scopes, my loaners have the chinese holosun and sig sauer red dots. So I agree, buy once, cry once. As fer slings, I like the viking one, 2 point with the tab to shorten it, works for me and simple.

I agree with you in principle, but the sling did fail (clip at end of video) and the endplate with integrated sling mount did interfere with Andrew’s ability to charge his weapon unimpeded.

@JR,
Don’t disagree. So it’s a good thing he went to a class where he ran his gun. Like we should all do.
Having them isn’t the same thing as running them.
But the failure was still his. He did it, it was his to learn from, and he will do it better the next time.

Herschel, your point cannot be emphasized enough: do what works for YOU. Generalized guiding principles (Keep It Simple, Stupid) are good, but details matter and those are gonna be different for each rifleman. I fought against the mania for uniformity in the Army, and I preach against the tyranny of fashion in my civilian instruction.
Never forget: If it’s stupid but it works; it’s not stupid.

The critiques I see are typically someone pointing out that a carbine isn’t properly appointed for war.
My home defense gun isn’t appointed for war. Even the sling is different than what I would carry afield. I’m not going to be climbing over walls with my home defense gun. Even the ammo was chosen to limit overpenetration.
10/10 Old Bill.

I got one of those Viking Tactical 2-point slings when they were still fairly new and affordable. I do like it a lot. Then I went to the Vicker’s slings for everything else. I’m a huge proponent of keeping it simple.
I just “discovered” this guy’s channel with this video on triggers. Maybe I like what he says because it goes along with my experience, as well. He keeps things simple.
