I like to say that try brain is the organ through which the mind interacts with the physical world.

SciFi movies about “mind reading implants” and such simply fantasy. The most that can be done is develop correlations between electrical signals and thinking-feeling states. Certainly by altering the brain, the function of the mind can be impaired. Similarly, repeated thoughts, decisions, and actions can produce demonstrable neural changes. But there will never be the sort of connection people like Elon Musk imagine.

No doubt, electrochemical implants could calm or agitate you, could increase or decrease your ability to focus. But, for example, they cannot “out a thought in your head” or, in a trivial example, abruptly change you from preferring the color Red To the color Blue (political association intentional!).

They would be able to exert control. Just like modern car networking can take control of your car away from you (just to prevent theft, they’d never use it to cause a crash, for example), they would certainly be able to inflict pain, confusion, anxiety, etc.

Read “Harrison Bergeron” by Vonnegut. That is more of what I envision, interference with anything & anyone opposed to their goals for power & control.

Funny, 150 years ago no one thought we could land a man on the moon. Impossible! In the early 1900s, my grandfather did not believe the newspaper reports about men flying in a machine like a bird. Did not believe it for years….until one day while farming he saw three fly over. From that, eighty years later his grandson would fly the Falcon 900/700EX transatlantic (Houston/ Lagos) hundreds of times…routinely. Boringly routinely.
