Colt – Betrayal Of The American Gun Owner
BY Herschel Smith5 years ago
Of the things that turn gun owners against gun manufacturers, these three things are highest on the list.
- Aligning with gun control
- Exclusive focus on military contracts
- Reliance on name branding in lieu of true appreciation for the customer (e.g., H&K). Look up the H&K memes like “Hi, we’re H&K and we hate you.”
It’s difficult to understand what’s so hard about this.

1) Colt just couldn’t compete in the civilian marketplace. Having worked in aerospace manufacturing, I am conversant with the APICS body of knowledge regarding production and inventory control. I know that making a cookie-cutter product is overall exponentially easier and cheaper than making something available in numerous variations and supporting all of them through their projected product life cycle. Thus Colt is continuing in an arena where it can compete and leaving one where it can’t.
2) Colt will continue to produce handguns. See #1.
3) This isn’t Colt’s 1st goatrope with poor business management and manufacturing quality. Other, smaller, better managed companies have taken the platform and run with it, and Colt can’t keep up. They can deliver an equal product cheaper or a better product at the same price. See #1.

Still wearing the same spots.
Colt pulled out of the civilian AR market before; citing preference for the military M16
contracts. It was not very customer oriented and was quite arrogant back then.
I never looked at buying a Colt product since that time.
