Happy Independence Day

BY Herschel Smith
4 years, 9 months ago

General Cornwallis had as his strategy to conduct war in South Carolina, taking and holding the important port city of Charleston, and then move north through North Carolina, meeting up with General Howe to end the campaign.  It was a bold plan, and he had dealt a blow to the continental forces on the field of battle on a number of occasions.

But the size of the continent and the temperament of the people made it impossible to prosecute a war of this kind with the forces and lines of logistics he had at his disposal.  The linchpin of his plan called for the utilization of loyalist forces to do battle with patriots.

Enter Major Patrick Ferguson, who was tasked by Cornwallis with leading loyalist forces, whom he had no difficulty recruiting in his sweep through South Carolina.  He sent a message to the patriots: “If you do not desist your opposition to the British Arms, I shall march this army over the mountains, hang your leaders, and lay waste your country with fire and sword.”

Not dissuaded from battle, the patriot forces, enhanced mainly by the “Overmountain men,” decided to give chase to Major Patrick Ferguson and the loyalists.  The loyalist forces heard of the plan because of a couple of deserters from the patriot forces, and decided to retreat to the protection of Cornwallis and his forces.

The Overmountain Men had ridden horseback for a protracted period to convene with other forces, much of it sleeping in the day and riding at night.  But now they had to move quickly.  After convening, they had to ride horseback through the night, and much of the day, and prosecuted battle in the afternoon hours with no sleep.  Yet they dealt a decisive blow to the loyalist forces.

Many of the Overmountain Men were under the age of 18, raised hard and experienced in the American bush and hills.  In the small townships in the Appalachian mountains, the men had to stay and tend crops, tend livestock, and protect the family.  Sons had to be dispatched to fight the campaign.  Women and men, mothers and fathers, lined the roads and sang hymns as their sons rode by and they dispatched their sons to war.  They saw it as a religious quest.

The patriot victory at King’s Mountain had great significance.  Cornwallis, who had planned to use a victory over the patriots there, held his plans in abatement.  His plans to use loyalists completely shattered and abandoned, he got bogged down in a guerrilla campaign in South Carolina in the bush and swamps.  He finally set out through North Carolina, but his forces were so depleted, sick and without logistics that all he could manage was a retreat to the coast to ensconce until surrender.  His lines of logistics had effectively been cut by the patriots.

This marked the turning point of the campaign.  Cornwallis won conventional victories, but was never able to manage the insurgency in South Carolina.  The British lost, and General Howe wasn’t far behind the surrender of Cornwallis.

This fourth of July, celebrate the lives of the great men who brought you what liberty you enjoy.

I thank God every day for the men that risked all for our country. Happy Fourth to all!

So many pregnant threads: the age of the combatants (which you won’t hear from anywhere else but here), to the sturdiness of the men from that time, to the religious quest they saw in what they did, to the strategy of Cornwallis v. the patriot fighter, and on and on.

But you failed utterly to pull any of those threads, focusing instead on a topic I have brought up in OTHER posts, but not this one. At all.

Remembering them is all fine and good but in reality it’s nothing
more than a desensitizing pain balm that prevents all too many
from consciously seeing that America is now a vaucously grinning
moldering syphillitic whore rather than the once beautiful Virgin of 1776.

Those days and that beauty is gone forever…
    Unless,

Allow women to exercise gynocentrism freely

No, it wasn’t. It’s my blog, it was my post, and I get to decide whether something is on-point. I decided, and it wasn’t. See how that works? It’s awesome. I like it.

You’re a one trick pony, incapable of thinking or saying or doing anything else. You can’t even stop long enough to ponder, be a thinking man, and use what I’ve said for educational purposes you’re so bitter.

Oh, and we’re not quite where you think we are, at least, not yet. If you think we are, carry an AR-15 across the border into Mexico, China or Russia and tell me how it went for you. Write me a note from prison if they’ll let you. I’ll post it for everyone to see because that WILL be pertinent to my point.

So what you did is trash this article, this article which I carefully crafted to enable my readers to ponder deeper issues of history for educational purposes and add to the conversation in an educated, intelligent manner. You didn’t do that. You hijacked the discussion thread to make it look like something you would read over 4Chan. And didn’t have the courage to even use your own, real name.

It’s my fault. I resolve not to let that happen again. I hate nothing so much as hijacking a discussion thread for bitter, one-trick ponies.

    @Sullivan,

Yea, we may not agree on everything, I’m a protestant and Calvinist. But I do find it amusing and ironic that the very people who gripe, bitch and moan about the state of affairs is the generation which allow the murder of 70 million unborn. God doesn’t hear our gripes. He ignores us until the nation repents.

“For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.
Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.
And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.”

It might-would be instructive to remember why these Overmountain men won.

King David was chased all over the land by his king who was trying to kill him. Saul even threw a javelin at him in the king’s court. One of David’s wives hated him because he was happy and successful. Yet David pursued the LORD, instead of any other thing.

The enemies of David didn’t fear him because he had anger in his heart. They feared him because he had love for his LORD, his Nation, his tribe, like a sow for her cubs, a most dangerous man.

The reason the US won independence was because they fought for God Almighty. I remain convinced of this. A great many of those who risked it all to come to the new world had great hopes in the future expansion of England’s empire. But that changed when the king violated the laws of God and men. But they kept their eyes on God, strengthened themselves with quiet resolve to press for the mark in Christ Jesus.

The words of David himself: “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.”

Government need not fear the bitter and the angry; they will make 5 mistakes before anything even gets started, anger clouding the judgment of a man. No it’s love, love of Holy God, Liberty, a sound foundation of the knowledge of good and evil, and an abiding love of your people that is feared by all those who follow after the fallen angels. The enemies of David knew war was coming, and they knew when the battle was joined by David and his men known God, that they had no chance against them.

Even those with the heart of a lion melt at the coming of the Sons of God. Oh that this generation would only believe it.

Cornwallis was brilliant (especially for the time), he traveled light in the Carolina campaign; starting by burning his own baggage to enforce his orders regarding no extra luxuries. Though he’d suffered losses (notably Cowpens) he’d also chased Greene all the way through South Carolina. Greene’s force was at their limit when Cornwallis forced a crossing of the Catawba River SE of Charlotte. Things looked very bleak for the Patriots. This was the situation into which the Overmountain Men marched.
Their victory at King’s Mountain forced Cornwallis to pause to reorganize his formations. That brief respite from Cornwallis’s unrelenting pressure allowed Greene to get the remnants of his army across the Dan River into Virginia. (They destroyed every boat on the river for miles) It was there that Greene rebuilt his army into the force that destroyed Cornwallis’s fighting power at the battle of Guildford Courthouse.
Actions have consequences. The Overmountain Men, by choosing to face the threat Patric Ferguson had sent them, bringing him to battle and destroying the left wing of Cornwallis’s advance, made victory possible in the South.

I agree only in part. “Failed” is past tense. We’re not completely there yet. I repeat. Someone take me up on my challenge to immigrate to China or Russia and attempt to buy an AR-15. Send me a note from prison.

I would be right in pointing out that I really, really love strawberry milkshakes too. But that wouldn’t be pertinent to this subject (i.e., learning strategy, tactics, the love of true religion, and the world and life view of our predecessors and pondering what we’ve gained from them, and what we can do to be more like them).

You know, things that make us thinking men instead of bitter old biddies and bitches.

Herschel – I’ll stick with ‘Failed’ as Unless and Until ‘We’ do the same thing to the current crop of Tyrants, and Restore the Republic in its original form (NOT the corporatist Fraud we live under) all that Work and Sacrifice of the Founders HAS been Squandered. There is No Way of “Voting” within this Corrupt System to make meaningful Changes, and this is the situation that the Founders of the Nation were in – “government” by a Foreign Power that has No Use for “Freedom” and “Liberty” among its Tax Slaves.
Nothing Changes until a LOT of Bodies get thrown in Ditches, and the bolsheviks Destroyed and Driven from every part of Government.

As for “Buying an AR-15 in Russia”, I would suspect, given the Sheer Numbers of Weapons from the (former) Soviet Military, that one can Buy a Full-Auto AK-47 in the Underground Market for comparable Money as a good AR here.

  22. On July 7, 2019 at 12:43 pm, Herschel Smith said:

    @Gryphon,

You missed the point(s), all of them. No one said we could vote away our problems. In fact, I have said the opposite on hundreds of occasions.

No AR-15 can fix the problems America faces. The people have changed. The culture has changed. You could overthrow everyone forever and it wouldn’t change a damn thing. The country has rejected God and His holy law-word. Whether tyranny, anarchy, or something else, it will be most unpleasant to you because God is not blessing us and will not bless us.

As for “failed,” I’ll stick with not yet. You go ahead and get that black market AK after immigrating to Russia. For now, I’ll keep my legal AR. We are living off of the proceeds of what our predecessors did for us. God will not bless us for much longer.

Again, where are the readers, other than Fred, and Papa [and Bill has added to the conversation here] who get the larger picture I’ve been trying so hard to paint?

Good Lord. Unwind from thinking about central banking and try, try, try to sit still for a few minutes and ponder deeper issues.

He was 57 years old, same age I just turned. And hoping that I’d have the same courage to risk everything if it became necessary. Ditto on my mother’s direct side where my grandfather and his brothers, all militia officers, walked onto the village green in Orange County NY to publicly sign the oath of loyalty to the Continental Congress.
