Lock Your Doors, Load Your Guns, And Get A Biting, Barking Dog

MARTIN COUNTY, KY (WOWK) – A Kentucky Sheriff has had enough after he says budget cuts have ravaged his department, telling citizens “Folks, lock your doors, load your guns and get you a barking, biting dog. If the Sheriff’s Office can’t protect you, who will?”
Martin County Sheriff John Kirk wrote on Facebook addressing citizens of the county on Sunday.
According to the Sheriff, with the recent cuts to the department, he will have to move his only other deputy to dayshift, leaving no protection on nights.
The sheriff said quote “I’m sure the thieves and drug dealers will have a ball.”
He is inviting citizens to attend a court meeting on Monday around 1 p.m.
He’s just trying to scare people. There are plenty of rural counties that don’t have coverage in remote parts of the county at all hours, day and night. Nor should they have to – it isn’t their job to protect you, nor can they accomplish such a thing. They know that, the Sheriff just wants to increase the size of his department.
But his advice is good regardless of why he gave it: “Folks, lock your doors, load your guns and get you a barking, biting dog.”
You should have done that a long time ago.

Nothing but scare tactics. Martin county is close to a KSP post and it has 5 elected constables. The constable position does not draw a salary, but they are paid “piece work” to transport prisoners, serve papers, and to shoot rabid dogs and distempered mules.

I have no doubt that he’s trying to scare the people into supporting more $$$ for his office, it’s a common tactic. It doesn’t matter how well funded or well staffed a department is. They are NOT going to be present when things go south so one must always be prepared to be their own first responder.

If you ever have an “incident” and have to call the county report takers, be sure to disarm BEFORE they arrive, stay on the phone with the dispatcher, give them YOUR description i.e clothing etc. lest you need a coroner as well.

Perhaps there’s a market for French-style yellow vests emblazoned with the logo: “Intended Crime Victim” or something similar to discourage after-event police crime victim shootings.

This sounds more like “Sour Grapes” than an Honest Effort to Remind Citizens that they are their own first responders. If this Sheriff, along with the County Prosecuting Attorney and a Judge or Three were to Declare “We Will Not Arrest and Prosecute Anyone for Self-Defense Actions” it would be a more Definitive statement than whining “We can’t Protect You”.
