A Grandma, Alligator, Horse, And Seasoned Raccoon

News from Texas.

The 12-foot alligator’s first mistake: crossing a Texas grandma with a Winchester .22 Magnum.

From the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday came a tale as Texan as they come. Judy B. Cochran – mayor of Livingston in East Texas; a great-grandmother called Nana by her family – had long held a suspicion that a massive alligator had killed her miniature horse three years ago. As she told the Chronicle:

“We think this is the gator that ate one of our miniature horses several years ago, as big as this gator was, he could’ve easily eaten it. Typically the gators don’t bother us, but we’ve been looking for (this one).”

The horse might have been smaller than the average horse, but this 580-pound reptile came a little larger than standard issue. According to the Chronicle, Cochran got the gator right where she wanted it after handlers caught it in a pond using a seasoned raccoon …

Fox 4 reports that Cochran was in a meeting when she was notified that the gator had been got. She took him out on her Goodrich ranch with just one shot, the Chronicle reports. Nine years ago, according to the Chronicle, Cochran’s then-5-year-old grandson killed an 800-pound alligator from the same pond.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Polk County (where Goodrich and Livingston sit) is “one of only 12 in Texas with an alligator hunting season,” giving Cochran a 20-day timeframe (and specific requirements about hunting permits and methods) to settle her score.

Just because the gator is off the hook literally doesn’t mean it’s off the hook metaphorically. The Chronicle reports that Cochran plans to eat the animal’s meat, have its head mounted and display part of its tail in her office.

Nana definitely plans to wear some alligator-skin boots once all is said and done.

Lessons: Texas.  ‘Nuff said.  Alligators.  At least Texas doesn’t have the love for the beasts that Florida apparently does, not in 12 counties.  What’s the problems with those other ones?

.22 Magnum.  Good for a lot of things.  But she must have hit it exactly where it counts.  Finally, raccoon.  Never eaten one, don’t want to, but apparently the gator was interested.  I’m wondering about WiscoDave?

    ALCON,

Perhaps the Houston Chronicle’s writer of this piece, Gilthorpe, should go back to grade school and learn what an “animal” is.

Alligators are reptiles. Just as the sharpshooting grandmother is quoted as describing the beast. Yet, I read numerous references to reptiles being animals. Gilthorphe being the latest iteration of ignoramuses to compromise biology. These morons are the products of the Amerikan edumacation system. Dumb and dumber.

    Words have meaning.

Reptiles ARE animals along with many other very dissimilar beings such as ants, lobsters, and MS-13 gang members. What was your point again?

    Frank Clarke @ 0717,

    “Reptiles ARE animals….” Really ?

My point was obvious. That being the ignorance of the writer not knowing her own language and being paid to use that language properly.

Perhaps you would care to expound on the intent behind your ludicrous remark ? What was YOUR point ?

Couple of things are bothersome about this. First, taking revenge against a beast (animal or no) that has exactly 2 wires, eat and reproduce, is how ones mind becomes clouded to the task of exacting an effective defense. That’s probably not what she did, just bad writing, not that I should cast stones. And secondly, why does a man, or a grandmother, have to wait until hunting season to defend themselves and their property against a being that has zero sense of right and wrong? Is this Texas? Sounds like federally controlled territory to me.

    Nice shot, Granny.

    Duke Norfolk @ 1126,

Duke, then there is no such thing as “reptiles” any longer. Not much different than the learned eradicating the word “homosexual” and replacing it with the acceptable term of “gay”.

Anything that has more than one cell, eats and defecates can be categorized as “animal”. Thus, birds are animals. Fishes are animals. No sense categorizing creatures on this earth other than the simplicity of lumping any and all into one category, eh ?

    “So humble yourself and apologize.”

    For what ?

C’mon, Herschel. Don’t be so hard on my former state of domicile. At least the felony charge is applied to everyone, all year round.

Texas only permits gator hunting in 12 out of 254 counties and only for 20 days out of 365. Doesn’t sound like there’s that much gator love in Texas either! :)

    I was just wondering if anyone else saw this news about Cody Wilson (Defense Distributed);

Since he has run afoul of TPTB due to his stance on the 2nd Amendment, I am inclined to feel that this news is just TOO convenient for his adversaries. The timing especially, makes it suspect.

From Noah Webster’s Dictionary of 1828, long before government schools rotted out our language:

AN’IMAL, n. [L. animal, from anima, air, breath, soul.]

An organized body, endowed with life and the power of voluntary motion; a living, sensitive, locomotive body; as, man is an intelligent animal. Animals are essentially distinguished from plants by the property of sensation. The contractile property of some plants, as the mimosa, has the appearance of the effect of sensation, but it may be merely the effect of irritability.

The distinction here made between animals and vegetables, may not be philosophically accurate; for we cannot perhaps ascertain the precise limit between the two kinds of beings, but this is sufficiently correct for common practical purposes.

The history of animals is called zoology.

By way of contempt, a dull person is called a stupid animal.

These sentences are the work of a retarded intellect or lies of the devil but most likely both.

This story just warms my heart. Grandma is no pussy and defends her family, kith, and kin. The gator-which is a REPTILE-is dispatched in short order and will have certain parts displayed as a reminder to all of the effeminate strokers that certain things need dead. No firearm was harmed and the world is still in balance. PS: one of my cousins moved to Florida and has tried to get me to move there. No thanks! I got my “Insanity Degree with Honors” in Kommiefornia, so no need for further study.

Animal or reptile. Makes no difference to me. It is an animal because it is not made in God’s image. Mankind is made in God’s image in knowledge, righteousness and holiness (Prophet, Priest and King). Everything else is in the noise.

As to animal or reptile, it depends upon how detailed one wants to get. Aristotle: Genus, Species, categories, etc., etc. Reptile is a species of animal, which is the controlling category, part of a larger category which DOES NOT include mankind.

While it’s true that God gave man dominion over the beasts of the field, because they’re a gift from God, one must never abuse them.

Killing an alligator isn’t animal abuse, it’s a natural act of our righteous dominion no different than harvesting a beef cow, sheep, or pig.

It seems to me, if my memory serves, on “Swamp People” those gators were shot with .22s to minimize meat and hide destruction.
