Thank you Dawg and Stephane. Yes, here at The Captain's Journal we are HUGE fans of Odierno. He is not only a warrior, he is one who kept the vision when his own son lost an arm to the campaign. He is a better man than me. My respect to him.

Yes, I didn't speak about LTG ODIERNO, but I mentioned his accomplishment in my article (when I speak about the change produced by a campaign plan, necessary to link tactical successes on a broader objective).
Cordialement
Stéphane TAILLAT
PS: I recommend you read (or read again) what Clausewitz says about the "Trinity" (People, Army, Government) and their particular configuration in a given country/a given conflict....

I have been following the discussions about COIN with great interest. I agree with what the Captain is saying regarding how it needs to be carried out and how it is done now by our Military, who have now developed it into an art-form, both in Iraq and in E. Afghanistan.

While - obviously - not enough can be said about the brilliance of General Petraeus, one must not overlook Lt. Gen. R. Odierno and his brilliance of actually carrying it out.

I have not seen any mention of a very interesting article in the Weekly Standard a while back, which deals with this.

I take the liberty of posting the link to the article. I am sure that you all will find it very interesting, as it notes quite a few things that have been said here on TCJ.

What Lt. Gen. Odierno did, was very much "force projection". And then some.

Protecting the populace, killing the enemy or running then out of cities and then hammering the enemy relentlessly in overlapping offensives.

In the ME the people gravitate towards power and competence. The US has that. Nobody else does. There is no other outside entity that - now - understands the arab world, their social structures, etc. better than the US Armed Forces.
